Sevilla D claim hard-fought victory in rescheduled matchday 16 clash against San Martín

The Sevilla side secured a narrow win in a balanced and highly competitive match corresponding to matchday 16, originally postponed due to severe weather conditions, keeping their playoff ambitions firmly alive.

The match played this weekend corresponded to Matchday 16, initially scheduled for February 8, but postponed due to adverse weather conditions that forced the suspension of fixtures. The competition resumed with Sevilla D visiting the Municipal San Martín Stadium.

The Sevilla reserve side arrived following a tough defeat against the league leaders, which ended an impressive positive run. The team sat in fifth place in the standings, just three points away from the playoff positions. Meanwhile, San Martín, playing at home, entered the match after two consecutive defeats, occupying ninth place in the table.

The referee signaled kickoff and the match began with a strong sense of balance and competitiveness between both sides. The first notable chance came in the 15th minute when San Martín attempted a long-range free kick that narrowly missed the post.

Throughout the first half, both teams created attacking approaches but few clear-cut opportunities emerged, as the game was marked by frequent interruptions and numerous fouls. The breakthrough arrived in the 34th minute when Manu Cruzado opened the scoring with an excellent direct free kick, giving Sevilla D the lead. Shortly before halftime, the home side had a chance following an error in Sevilla’s build-up play, but their forward failed to capitalize.

The second half mirrored the first: a tight, intense and evenly contested encounter. San Martín pushed forward, relying on their home advantage, but Sevilla D’s defensive organization proved solid. Goalkeeper Mario Rodríguez delivered a crucial moment with an outstanding goal-line save to preserve the lead.
